On February 7, 2023, in Norman, Oklahoma, 43-year-old Sara Polston was driving through a residential neighborhood after drinking earlier that day. According to police, she was traveling 66 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone and ran a stop sign before crashing into a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Micaela Borrego, who was making a legal turn. The impact was catastrophic. Borrego suffered a traumatic brain injury and a stroke. She spent two months in a coma. Doctors initially gave her only a small chance of survival. She would go on to relearn how to eat, speak, and walk. Her life was changed forever. Investigators determined Polston's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit. Doorbell camera footage from the neighborhood captured the vehicle speeding through the street just seconds before the crash. In October 2025, Polston pleaded guilty to a felony DUI charge causing great bodily injury. That December, she was sentenced to 15 years, with all but eight years suspended.
