* (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Elkhart, Indiana — On February 8, 2026, shortly after 1:30 a.m., Elkhart Police Department Officer Ragsdale was driving past the area of High Dive Park pavilion and noticed a vehicle that was running while sitting stationary in the parking lot after the park was closed. Officer Ragsdale stopped to investigate and requested backup after seeing several occupants inside the vehicle, some appearing to be juveniles. While speaking with the driver, Officer Ragsdale detected the odor of alcohol and began identifying everyone inside the vehicle. Investigators later determined the front-seat passenger had provided officers with a false name and was on juvenile probation for prior offenses, including auto theft, resisting law enforcement, and dangerous possession of a firearm. As officers began removing the occupants from the vehicle one at a time, investigators said the front-seat passenger, who had initially complied with instructions, suddenly reached down between his legs, ignored repeated commands to show his hands, then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and fired a handgun toward Officer Breneman. Officers Breneman and Ragsdale immediately returned fire, striking the 17-year-old boy. Additional officers arrived within a minute and rendered first aid until paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Crime scene investigators recovered the handgun the teen allegedly fired, along with a second handgun on the passenger-side floorboard that had been illegally modified with a fully automatic "switch."
